Handle with Care: Turning Equity into a Tangible Tool

HGA’s Equity team had a concept: a card deck that would push project teams to ask the questions they were avoiding. I had the rest.

I designed the logo, the 120 cards, and the packaging — getting the size, stock, and finish right from the ground up. Heavy matte cardstock, soft-touch coating, a rigid box built for years of real use. The kind of thing you pull out at a project kickoff and take seriously.

The visual system organized a complex topic into six color-coded categories each targeting a specific phase of the architectural process. Not a compliance exercise. A tool for the vulnerable, empathetic dialogue that makes architecture a driving force for equity rather than a reflection of unchallenged assumptions.

It reprinted three times in year one. Now distributed across all 12 HGA regional offices, integrated into the firm’s standard Design Start process, and featured at NOMA National and AIA DesignDC. HGA’s VP of Equity called it the “essential bridge between corporate policy and project-level execution.”

Equity as a part of what we do every day—designed, packaged, and put in people’s hands.
